Magnesium oxide (chemical formula: MgO) is an oxide of magnesium, an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of periclase and is the raw material for magnesium smelting.
Magnesium oxide has high fire-resistant insulating properties. It can be transformed into crystals by burning at a high temperature above 1000°C, and it can become dead-burned magnesia (also called magnesia) or sintered magnesia when it rises to 1500-2000°C.
Magnesium oxide is commonly known as bitter soil, also known as magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide is an alkaline oxide, which has the properties of an alkaline oxide and belongs to the gelling material. White powder (light yellow is magnesium nitride), odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, is a typical alkaline earth metal oxide, chemical formula MgO. White powder, melting point is 2852°C, boiling point is 3600°C, relative density is 3.58 (25°C). Soluble in acid and ammonium salt solution, insoluble in alcohol. When exposed to the air, it is easy to absorb water and carbon dioxide and gradually become basic magnesium carbonate. The light product is faster than the heavy product. It combines with water to form magnesium hydroxide under certain conditions, showing a slightly alkaline reaction. The pH of the saturated aqueous solution is for 10.3. Soluble in acid and ammonium salt, hardly soluble in water, its solution is alkaline. Insoluble in ethanol. It has strong refraction in the visible and near ultraviolet range.
Magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3 CaCO3) and seawater are the main raw materials for the production of magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide can be obtained by thermally decomposing magnesite or dolomite. Treat seawater with slaked lime to obtain magnesium hydroxide precipitation, and burn magnesium hydroxide to obtain magnesium oxide. It can also use the magnesium chloride brine blocks obtained in the comprehensive utilization of seawater or the brine after bromine extraction as raw materials, add sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate to form magnesium hydroxide or basic magnesium carbonate precipitation, and then burn to obtain magnesium oxide. China mainly uses magnesite, dolomite, brine or brine blocks as raw materials.
Due to different preparation methods, it can be divided into light magnesium oxide and heavy magnesium oxide.
Light magnesium oxide is a chemical synthesis product with high content, white color, loose volume, and white amorphous powder.
Heavy magnesia is a sintered product. Because of the different sintering temperatures, it can be divided into light sintered magnesia powder and heavy sintered magnesia powder.
Fertilizer grade application: Magnesium oxide is widely used in agriculture. It can improve the yield and quality of crops; it has a good buffering effect on the pH of the soil; it can be used to prepare pesticides; it has the advantages of low toxicity, low residue, and safety to crops.
Feed grade application: The application of magnesium oxide in feed industry can improve the nutritional value, digestibility and utilization rate of feed, improve the taste and appetite of animals, and reduce the incidence of diseases and mortality of animals.
Industrial grade application: Magnesium oxide is used as a filler in the manufacture of polishing agents, adhesives, and paints; it is used as an accelerator and catalyst in artificial fibers and rubber; it is used in the chemical industry to manufacture metal magnesium and magnesium chemicals.
Building material level application: In the construction industry, magnesium oxide can be used to produce magnesium-containing special cement and insulation boards.
Matters needing attention when using magnesium oxide:
- Fire Protection: Magnesium Oxide is a flammable substance so it needs to be handled with care and contact with open flames should be avoided. Fire extinguishers and fire protection equipment should be available when storing and using magnesium oxide.
- Hygiene: Magnesium oxide may come into contact with the mouth, nose and eyes during use, so care must be taken to protect these parts. After use, skin should be washed with soap and water immediately.
- Operating environment: When operating magnesium oxide, it should be avoided in the environment of high temperature, high humidity and poor ventilation. At the same time, in order to avoid flying dust, personal protective equipment such as masks and goggles should be worn.
- Safe storage: Magnesium oxide should be stored in a dry, ventilated, and sun-proof place, and avoid prolonged exposure to the air. Magnesia may deliquesce and deteriorate if not stored properly.
- Quality control: In order to ensure the quality and performance of magnesium oxide, it is necessary to control the selection of raw materials, processing and storage conditions and other factors. When using magnesium oxide, raw materials that meet the requirements should be selected, and processing and storage conditions should be strictly controlled.
